Mobile Websites Frustrate Users

UK business has been caught napping on the issue of how their website looks on mobile devices. Despite 1 in 3 adults (UK Government statistics) using mobile devices such as phones and PDAs to access the internet, less than 1% of sites have a dedicated mobile version. Some sites render in mobile browsers but the majority are slow, impossible to navigate and very user-unfriendly.

Should businesses be worried? Well, yes, in a word. The internet's most popular sites now have mobile versions - Google, MySpace, FaceBook, eBay, BBC News and Yahoo, and with users expecting everything to 'just work', they will get frustrated when they find your site in Google and can't access the content. In many cases it may just be to find a contact number, your address, an email or a bit about what you do but their view of your company will dip if your website takes ages to load and then does not give them the information they need.

The upsurge in mobile web browsing will only accellerate as operators introduce flat-rate charges, mobile broadband speeds increase, and more phones with bigger, better and higher resolution screens become available. Recently, people have started cancelling their landline in favour of using their mobiles for all voice calls. We are also now seeing people cancelling their broadband subscriptions and using smartphones and wireless broadband for internet access.
